As established roofers in Whitehaven, we often cover this part of Cumbria, serving many of our clients. Abbey Roofing have been visiting here for over 20 years, working on various roofing projects which include flat roofs, pitched slate roofing & tiled roofs.
The harbour town of Whitehaven has it all. Hosting a thriving port, importing tobacco from the U.S. and exporting coal during the 18th & 19th century, you only need to walk around this historic town to realise the importance and wealth it once had.
Georgian Architecture in Whitehaven
Grand Georgian architecture is still very prominent in Whitehaven. It’s the most complete example of town planning from the Georgian era. Low-pitched slate roofs form behind a parapet wall that will accommodate all the water drainage, out of sight from street level. Pictured here is the Lloyds Bank building on Lowther street. Due to substantial refurbishment, back in around 2006 we replaced all the lead gutters behind the parapet wall on the main roof. The roof was re-slated across over 75% of the main roof area with Westmorland green slates. As a result, the roof was restored to heritage standard. We recently repaired a sliding sash window on a Georgian town house at Collage street, Whitehaven,
This is a beautifully restored, perfect example of some types of historic buildings in Whitehaven, Cumbria.
The windows were repaired with Accoya wood, due to its ‘modified timber’. It is subjected to a chemical process that changes the cell structure, preventing its ability to hold moisture. rot or decay.
